Laurie MacMillan Contemporary Fine Art by Laurie MacMillan

In 2002 I began working with clay, throwing shapes, altering surfaces and experimenting with glazes.  Two years later I discovered that painting allowed me to work more spontaneously, with better control of my color palette.  My fascination with texture transferred from clay to canvas.  Rather than realistically recreating the natural and geological features that have always fascinated me, I've tried to show my response to them.  My abstract acrylic paintings start with a canvas and an idea, but I go where the paint takes me.  Most paintings have many layers before I feel they are complete.  My goal is to showcase my love for the natural world, and for movement and color.  Sometimes, I paint empty abstract landscapes, reflecting my concern about the world's overpopulation, and my love of open spaces.  When viewers have an emotional reaction to my work, I feel I've succeeded.
