In 2002 I began working with clay, throwing shapes, altering surfaces and experimenting with glazes. Two years later I discovered that painting allowed me to work more spontaneously, with better control of my color palette. My love of texture transferred from clay to canvas. Rather than realistically recreating the natural and geological features that have always fascinated me, I've tried to show my response to them. My
abstract acrylic paintings start with a canvas and an idea, but I go where the paint takes me. Most paintings have many layers before I feel they are complete.
On November 13, 2008, my home and studio burned to the ground in the Tea Fire in Santa Barbara, CA, along with well over 200 other homes. About sixty paintings were lost. I am painting again after months of focusing on reorganizing our life. Having new work has allowed me to feel good about deleting the destroyed paintings from this site.
